Taylor Fritz claimed his first ATP title of the season on Sunday, defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets in a rain-interrupted final in Stuttgart.
The American looked in control throughout, securing a 6-3, 7-6 (7/0) win despite a long rain delay early in the second set. It marks his first trophy since winning in Eastbourne a year ago—also on grass.
Fritz now has five straight wins over Zverev and is expected to climb to No. 4 in the world rankings, just behind the German. This victory is a solid boost ahead of Wimbledon, which kicks off on June 30.
Zverev, the top seed in Stuttgart and last year’s US Open finalist, is still chasing his first career title on grass. Surprisingly, he’s never even made it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
In the final, Fritz grabbed the first set with a well-timed break in the eighth game. The second set remained tight, with neither player managing a break. But when it came down to the tie-break, Fritz was unstoppable—storming through it and winning the last 11 points of the match to seal a confident victory.
