Reilly Opelka delivered a composed and powerful performance to upset top seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(5), 7-6(5) and secure a place in the semifinals of the Libema Open in Den Bosch. The match was decided by fine margins, with neither player dropping serve across the two tightly contested sets. However, Opelka’s flawless execution in the crucial moments made the difference.
The American fired 24 aces and maintained a clean serving record with zero double faults, in contrast to Medvedev’s five, including three costly errors in the second set tiebreak. Opelka’s big serve and consistent baseline play proved decisive on grass, a surface that suits his style.
This marks the second time in his career that Opelka has reached a semifinal on grass, the first being in Newport last year. He now awaits the winner of the quarterfinal between Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal and Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.
Elsewhere in the draw, second seed Ugo Humbert advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Nuno Borges and will face Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who upset third seed Karen Khachanov 7-6(6), 6-4.
In the women’s competition, second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova fought back from a set down to defeat Veronika Kudermetova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. She will meet Belgian third seed Elise Mertens in the semis after Mertens eased past Yue Yuan 6-0, 6-4. Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse also reached the last four by defeating Bianca Andreescu 6-2, 6-4, and will now take on Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
