Mumbai : Mumbai is currently hosting the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA 2025), a prestigious global competition featuring nearly 300 of the brightest high school astronomers from 64 countries. Organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, this event runs from August 11 to 21, 2025, marking the grand return of this Olympiad to Mumbai after over a decade. The Olympiad aims to celebrate young scientific talent, international collaboration, and India’s growing leadership in astronomy.
Participants of IOAA 2025 engage in challenging theoretical, observational, and data analysis examinations that test their grasp of astronomy and astrophysics at the highest secondary school levels. This year’s theme, “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam”—meaning “the world is one family under one sky”—reflects the spirit of unity and scientific diplomacy the Olympiad fosters globally. Several countries are participating for the first time, including some from the Global South, highlighting the event’s expanding diversity and global significance.
The opening ceremony was held at the Jio World Convention Centre with prominent dignitaries such as Principal Scientific Adviser Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood and former International Astronomical Union Vice President Prof. Ajit Kembhavi in attendance. The closing ceremony is scheduled at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, where distinguished guests including the ISRO Chairman will be present. Hosting the largest-ever IOAA not only exemplifies India’s stature in science education but also creates an enriching platform for cultural exchange and scientific networking among the world’s young astronomy enthusiasts.
