The recognition followed an emphatic performance by the Indian men’s hockey team, which defeated Malaysia 5–1 in the final to secure gold at the 2026 Asian Games.

The victory confirmed India’s status as the tournament’s most successful men’s hockey team and marked the first time the country had successfully defended its Asian Games men’s hockey title. India had also won gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
