Newcastle, UK – Newcastle United have officially announced the signing of German defender Malick Thiaw from Serie A giants AC Milan. The Premier League club confirmed the transfer late on Tuesday, bringing in a key defensive reinforcement for the upcoming season.
Transfer Details and Player Profile
While financial specifics of the deal were not disclosed by the club, British media reports indicate that Newcastle paid a transfer fee of approximately £34.6 million ($46.69 million) for the 24-year-old center-back.
Thiaw was a vital part of Milan’s defensive setup last season (2024-25), making 31 appearances across all competitions. However, his playing time saw a reduction towards the end of their Serie A campaign, which concluded with a disappointing eighth-placed finish for the Italian side.
On the international stage, Thiaw has earned three caps for Germany, all of which came during 2023.
Howe’s Praise and Summer Signings
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his satisfaction with the new arrival. “We’re really pleased to have Malick on board. He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options,” Howe stated.
Thiaw becomes Newcastle’s third signing of the summer transfer window. He follows the arrivals of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who joined on loan from Southampton.
Newcastle, fresh off a fifth-place finish last season that secured them a spot in the UEFA Champions League, are set to kick off their Premier League campaign with an away fixture against Aston Villa this Saturday.
