New York: Kick-Off Pushed Back by 10 Minutes After Logistical Nightmare
The highly anticipated FIFA Club World Cup 2025 semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Real Madrid faced a delayed start on Wednesday after both teams encountered significant travel disruptions en route to the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Originally slated for a 3:00 PM local kick-off, the match finally began at 3:10 PM.
Real Madrid, who flew in from Palm Beach, faced a turbulent journey due to a tropical storm that forced their aircraft to reroute and circle above Virginia before eventually landing at JFK Airport. The team’s schedule was further thrown off by heavy traffic while traveling from Manhattan to the stadium, causing the cancellation of several pre-match activities.
PSG were similarly delayed by congestion in the Lincoln Tunnel while traveling from their Manhattan base, adding to the late start.
Weather Woes and Missing Stars Set the Stage for a Dramatic Evening
With temperatures soaring above 35°C (95°F) and humidity at stifling levels, both teams had to adapt to sweltering conditions. PSG coach Luis Enrique emphasized the challenge the heat would pose, especially considering the disrupted pre-match preparations.
Both sides also entered the clash without key defenders. Real Madrid were without Trent Alexander-Arnold, sidelined with a training injury, and Dean Huijsen, who was serving a suspension. Federico Valverde was drafted into a makeshift defensive role. PSG, on the other hand, started Lucas Beraldo in place of suspended centre-back Willian Pacho.
Mbappé Headlines Blockbuster Showdown with Former Club
All eyes were on Kylian Mbappé as he lined up for Real Madrid against his former side, PSG, in what was billed as a personal and professional showdown. PSG fielded a strong attack featuring Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Winner to Face Chelsea in Final on July 13
With Chelsea having already secured their place in the final after defeating Fluminense, the victor of this semi-final would book a spot in Sunday’s title match. Despite the chaotic build-up, the stage was set for an electrifying encounter between two of Europe’s football powerhouses.
