For Gurjit Kaur, impossible has never meant out of reach. From travelling long distances to attend school and hockey training to scoring on the biggest Olympic stage, the Indian drag-flicker has built her career through determination, discipline and an unrelenting desire to succeed.

Born in 1995 in Miadi Kalan village in Punjab’s Amritsar district, Gurjit rose from a modest rural background to become one of India’s most recognised penalty-corner specialists. After representing India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she is now working towards a return to the national team.

Gurjit Kaur’s Historic Goal at the Tokyo Olympics

One of the defining moments of Gurjit’s career came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where India’s women’s hockey team reached the semifinals for the first time in its Olympic history.

Gurjit scored the decisive goal from a penalty corner in India’s memorable 1–0 quarterfinal victory over Australia. The result sent shockwaves through women’s hockey and helped India move closer to a historic Olympic medal.

She also scored against Argentina in the semifinal, although India eventually lost 2–1. Despite missing out on a medal, the team’s performance marked a significant milestone for Indian women’s hockey.

Her powerful drag-flicks, precision and ability to deliver under pressure established her as one of the country’s key attacking weapons.

From Miadi Kalan to International Hockey

Gurjit’s journey was far from easy. Growing up in Miadi Kalan, she and her sister, Pardeep Kaur, travelled around 13 kilometres a day to reach school. Access to facilities and opportunities was a challenge, but her determination helped her progress through the sporting system.

She first represented India in 2014 and developed into a specialist drag-flicker through domestic competition, international exposure and guidance from experienced coaches. Her performances included eight goals at the 2017 Asia Cup and 11 goals at the 2018 FIH Series Finals in Japan.

These achievements helped establish her reputation as a dependable penalty-corner scorer, a crucial role in modern hockey where set-piece opportunities can decide close matches.

Can Gurjit Kaur Return to the Indian Team?

Gurjit has continued competing in domestic hockey, including representing Northern Railway. She also earned praise for her performances in the Pro League in 2023 and the Hockey India League in 2025.

Following India’s Asian Games triumph in 2026, Gurjit congratulated the national women’s team and expressed hope that she would return to the national squad.

Her comeback ambitions underline the challenges athletes face in maintaining their place at the highest level. Experience and ability remain valuable, but consistent performances, fitness and competition for places will be crucial.

Gurjit has also highlighted the importance of better facilities and safe hostel accommodation for women athletes. She believes initiatives such as Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan can help young players access opportunities and develop their potential.

What Gurjit Kaur’s Journey Means for Women’s Hockey

Gurjit’s story is about more than Olympic goals. It reflects the determination required to overcome geographical, infrastructural and personal barriers in Indian sport.

Her journey also highlights the importance of supporting young women athletes beyond major tournaments. Access to coaching, quality facilities, safe accommodation and regular competition can help turn local talent into international performers.

As Gurjit works towards another opportunity with India, her message remains clear: setbacks do not have to define an athlete’s career. For a player who rose from a small Punjab village to score on the Olympic stage, the next chapter is still waiting to be written.
