Indian Women’s Hockey Team Suffers Heavy 1–5 Defeat to Belgium

Indian Women’s Hockey Team Suffers Heavy 1–5 Defeat to Belgium

Antwerp, June 21, 2025 — In what proved to be a night of fine margins and harsh lessons, India’s women’s hockey team fell to a 1–5 loss against a relentless Belgium side in their fifth consecutive defeat on the European leg of the FIH Pro League .

India struck first as Deepika calmly converted a penalty corner in the sixth minute, firing a low flick beneath the Belgian keeper’s legs . They defended resolutely until half-time, but the floodgates opened after the break.

Belgium seized control in the third quarter, manufacturing penalty corner chances through a mix of tight buildup play and aggressive pressing. Hélène Brasseur equalised, followed swiftly by Lucie Breyne tapping in from another set‑piece . In the final quarter, Ambre Ballenghien scored from a corner, and Charlotte Englebert sealed the commanding win with a penalty stroke late in the match .

This defeat marks India’s fifth straight loss in Europe, following earlier reversals to Australia, Argentina, and the Netherlands . Despite the setback, coach Harendra Singh noted pockets of disciplined defence in the first half, though the team wilted under sustained Belgian pressure.

Key observations and takeaways:

Set-piece struggles: India conceded five goals from penalty corners and a stroke. Against teams like Belgium, mastery over defensive structure and injection variation around corners is non-negotiable.

Resilient first half: After going down early, India regrouped admirably, keeping the hosts at bay until halftime—a sign that their game plan can hold water with further tweaks.

Second-half fatigue: Belgium’s physicality and tactical nuance overran a tiring Indian side, highlighting fitness and rotation as areas for growth.

Player watch: Deepika’s early strike will boost her confidence, and goalkeeper Savita Punia’s early save peppered hope amidst the pressure.

Looking ahead, India has a return leg against Belgium tomorrow—offering a chance for redemption and lessons learned under their belt. With direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup hanging in the balance, this match could define their campaign’s momentum.

In short, India’s effort began brightly but unraveled as their discipline and fresh legs waned. The path forward is clear: build set-piece strategy, sharpen physical endurance, and show up tougher in the second half. The return match tomorrow will reveal whether these lessons have taken hold.
