India Eye Historic Asian Games Hockey Gold Defence
India will aim to make history by winning consecutive Asian Games men’s hockey gold medals when they face Malaysia in the final at Kakamigahara, Japan, on Saturday. Alongside defending their title, the Indian team will have a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics at stake.
India have never won back-to-back Asian Games gold medals in men’s hockey. However, they will need to raise their performance after a demanding semifinal against Pakistan, while Malaysia arrive unbeaten after five consecutive victories.
India Look To Recover After Dramatic Pakistan Win
India booked their place in the final with a dramatic 4-3 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan on Thursday. They appeared to be in control after taking a 3-0 lead but allowed Pakistan to fight back and level the score.
With the match seemingly heading towards a shootout, Abhishek scored the decisive goal in the final minute of regulation time to seal India’s place in the gold-medal match.
The comeback exposed areas India will need to address, particularly their defensive lapses and missed penalty-corner opportunities. With only a day between the semifinal and final, recovery and composure will also be crucial.
Malaysia faced a stern test against South Korea in their semifinal but held on for a 2-1 victory. The result secured their second Asian Games final appearance in the last three editions and extended their unbeaten run in the tournament.
Craig Fulton Expects Attacking Contest
India head coach Craig Fulton expects an entertaining contest between two sides known for their attacking qualities.
“Malaysia have done well, had a good tournament so far, so it’s going to be a nice match-up. We haven’t played Malaysia for quite some time. I think the last time was at the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai,” Fulton said.
“These are two nice attacking teams, lots of skill, lots of flair, lots of speed,” he added.
Fulton stressed that India must remain focused on their own approach rather than look too far ahead.
“We want to focus on just our own game plan, put our proactive mindset into the game and leave it all out there on the pitch,” he said.
Harmanpreet, Manpreet Chase Historic Milestones
Captain Harmanpreet Singh will once again be central to India’s hopes. He has scored 10 goals from penalty corners and is second in the tournament’s scoring charts behind Pakistan’s Sufiyan Khan.
Strikers Abhishek and Dilpreet Singh have also been influential, scoring nine goals each.
Malaysia possess considerable attacking firepower of their own. Veteran Faizal Saari and Abu Kamal Azrai have both scored nine goals and will be important figures in the final.
The match also presents an opportunity for two Indian veterans to achieve individual milestones. A victory would make Harmanpreet the first Indian captain to lead the men’s team to two consecutive Asian Games hockey gold medals.
Manpreet Singh, India’s most-capped hockey player, could become the country’s only player to win three Asian Games gold medals. He was part of the title-winning teams in 2014 and 2023.
With history and Olympic qualification on the line, India and Malaysia are set for a high-stakes contest in the Asian Games final.
