India Beat Japan To Seal Asian Games Hockey Semifinal Berth
Defending champions India secured a place in the men鈥檚 hockey semifinals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 after defeating hosts Japan 2-0 in a hard-fought Pool A encounter in Kakamigahara on Saturday.
Abhishek opened the scoring in the 15th minute before skipper Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 40th minute to seal India’s fourth consecutive victory in the competition.
Abhishek Gives India The Lead
Japan started aggressively, matching India with their attacking play and enjoying 60 per cent possession in the opening quarter.
India earned an early penalty corner in the sixth minute, but Harmanpreet Singh could not convert the opportunity as Japan’s defence held firm.
Japan also threatened from a penalty corner in the 10th minute, but their goal was disallowed after the umpires ruled that the ball had touched an Indian player’s foot.
India eventually broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Abhishek scored a field goal to give the defending champions a slender lead.
Harmanpreet Singh Doubles India’s Advantage
The contest remained closely fought after the break, with Japan continuing to challenge India’s defence.
India extended their lead in the 40th minute when Harmanpreet Singh converted the team’s fifth penalty corner with a powerful low flick to the right of the Japanese goalkeeper.
The Indian skipper’s strike proved decisive as the defending champions maintained their advantage through the closing stages.
Penalty Corner Conversion Remains A Concern
Despite securing the victory, India struggled to make the most of their penalty corners, converting just one of the 10 opportunities they earned during the match.
India’s attacking pressure continued in the final quarter, when they won four penalty corners in quick succession but failed to convert any of them against a determined Japanese defence.
The penalty corner conversion rate is likely to remain an area of focus for chief coach Craig Fulton ahead of the knockout stage.
India Set Up Semifinal Spot With Fourth Straight Win
India’s victory over Japan extended their unbeaten run and confirmed their place in the semifinals of the men’s hockey competition.
The defending champions had earlier recorded convincing wins over Indonesia (13-1), Sri Lanka (16-1) and South Korea (8-2).
India will play Bangladesh in their final Pool A match on September 28 as they look to maintain their winning momentum before the semifinals.
