India’s Sports Selection Faces a Transparency Test as Mandaviya Pushes for Fair Trials

From camera-recorded trials to independent observers, the Sports Ministry wants athlete selection to become more transparent, accountable and difficult to manipulate.

New Delhi: India’s sports administration is moving towards a more transparent selection system, with Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya calling for greater accountability in trials and selection procedures across sporting disciplines.Speaking at the National Sports Federation Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, Mandaviya stressed that the process of selecting athletes for national teams must be fair, transparent and free from avoidable doubts. His message comes at a time when selection trials remain one of the most closely watched stages of an athlete’s career, particularly for those competing for a place at major international events.

Camera recordings, observers among proposed safeguards

One of the major areas highlighted by the Sports Minister was the need to make selection trials more transparent. The proposed approach includes recording selection trials on camera and ensuring the presence of independent observers. Such measures could provide a clearer record of how athletes performed and how final decisions were reached.

For athletes, this could be significant. A selection decision can determine whether years of training lead to an international opportunity or another cycle of waiting. A transparent system could therefore help reduce allegations of favouritism and give athletes greater confidence in the process.

Why transparency matters

Selection is not simply about picking a team. It can influence an athlete’s access to national camps, international competitions, financial support and opportunities to represent India.

The Sports Ministry’s push therefore places the spotlight on fairness and accountability rather than simply results.

A transparent process can also create a stronger distinction between performance-based selection and decisions influenced by factors outside sporting merit.

Athlete welfare also takes centre stage

The discussion at the conclave went beyond selection trials.

Mandaviya also emphasised issues surrounding athlete welfare, coaching and anti-doping efforts, highlighting the need for a broader support system around India’s sporting talent. The message is important because sporting success depends on much more than identifying talented athletes. Athletes need quality coaching, appropriate competition exposure, clean-sport systems and adequate support throughout their careers.

The bigger challenge: turning rules into practice

The announcement could mark an important step, but its success will ultimately depend on implementation.

Recording trials, appointing observers and establishing clearer procedures can create accountability only when these measures are consistently followed across federations and sports.

For India, the objective is bigger than avoiding controversy around individual selections. A credible selection system can help build trust between athletes, coaches, federations and administrators.

What could change for Indian athletes?

Selection trials: Greater emphasis on transparent and documented procedures.

Camera recording: Trial performances can be preserved for greater accountability.

Independent observers: Outside oversight could strengthen confidence in selection decisions.

Athlete welfare: Greater focus on the overall needs of athletes.

Coaching: Continued attention to the quality and effectiveness of training support.

Anti-doping: Stronger emphasis on maintaining clean and credible Indian sport.

No scorecard, but a significant sporting reform

Score: Not applicable — administrative and policy development

Key development: Sports Minister calls for greater transparency in selection trials

Venue: New Delhi

Event: National Sports Federation Conclave 2026

Focus areas: Selection transparency, independent observation, camera recording, athlete welfare, coaching and anti-doping

The road ahead

India’s sporting ambitions are growing, but medals and international performances are only one part of building a successful sporting ecosystem. The system that decides who gets the opportunity to compete is equally important.Mandaviya’s call for greater transparency puts that system under the spotlight. If the proposed safeguards are implemented consistently, selection trials could become more accountable and athletes could have greater faith that performance remains the strongest currency in earning a place on the national stage.

For Indian sport, that could be just as important as what happens after the team reaches the competition arena.
