Lamine Yamal’s World Cup dream begins with a goal

Spain returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Saudi Arabia 4-0 in a one-sided Group H encounter. The biggest talking point of the evening was 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, who marked his first World Cup start with his maiden goal on football’s biggest stage, underlining why he is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the game.

Having been held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in their tournament opener, Spain entered the match under pressure to deliver. They responded in style, dominating possession, creating chances from the opening whistle and never allowing Saudi Arabia to settle into the contest.

Yamal breaks the deadlock

Spain’s breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute, when Lamine Yamal finished a flowing attacking move with a composed close-range strike after excellent build-up play. The goal not only gave Spain the lead but also marked the youngster’s first FIFA World Cup goal, another milestone in his rapidly growing career.

Yamal had recently returned after recovering from a hamstring injury and looked sharp throughout his time on the pitch. His movement, pace and confidence constantly troubled the Saudi defence, proving why coach Luis de la Fuente trusted him with a starting role.

Oyarzabal’s quick-fire double puts Spain in control

Spain continued to pile on the pressure after taking the lead. Mikel Oyarzabal doubled the advantage in the 21st minute before scoring again just three minutes later, effectively ending the contest before halftime.

The Spanish midfield controlled proceedings with crisp passing and intelligent movement, while the attacking trio repeatedly found spaces behind Saudi Arabia’s defensive line. Saudi Arabia struggled to create meaningful opportunities as Spain dictated the tempo from start to finish.

Own goal seals comprehensive victory

Spain added a fourth goal shortly after the restart when a dangerous attack forced Saudi defender Hassan Al-Tambakti into turning the ball into his own net. From there, Spain comfortably managed the game, making substitutions while maintaining complete control.

Goalkeeper Unai Simón was rarely tested as Spain registered a convincing clean sheet alongside an impressive attacking performance.

A timely response from Spain

The convincing victory gives Spain their first win of the tournament and significantly strengthens their position in Group H after the disappointing draw in the opening fixture. More importantly, the performance showcased the quality of a squad capable of competing for the World Cup title.

For Yamal, the night will be remembered as another landmark achievement. Already the youngest goalscorer in Spain’s history and one of Barcelona’s standout stars, the teenager has now added a FIFA World Cup goal to his growing list of accomplishments, further cementing his status as one of football’s most exciting young players.
