BWF World Junior Championships 2026: India Starts Strong

India’s young shuttlers made an impressive start to the individual competition at the BWF World Junior Championships 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, on October 12. Tanvi Patri, Shaina Manimuthu, Parul Choudhary and Nishchal Chand were among the standout performers as India recorded multiple wins across the boys’ and girls’ singles draws.

Asian Under-17 champion Tanvi Patri defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsin Yu Huang 15–12, 15–11 in the girls’ singles Round of 128. Shaina Manimuthu delivered an even more dominant performance, beating Uganda’s Claire Namirembe 15–3, 15–3 to advance comfortably.

The results gave India early momentum in a tournament featuring some of the most promising Under-19 badminton players from around the world.

Tanvi Patri and Shaina Manimuthu Shine

Tanvi Patri Holds Her Nerve Against Hsin Yu Huang

Tanvi Patri had to work for her opening victory against Hsin Yu Huang. The Indian youngster won the first game 15–12 before maintaining her advantage to take the second 15–11.

Patri entered the championships after an encouraging run at junior level, including her Asian Under-17 title. Her composed performance in Cairo provided a positive start to her bid for a strong finish at the world championships.

Shaina Manimuthu Delivers a Dominant Win

Shaina Manimuthu produced one of India’s most convincing victories of the opening day. Facing Claire Namirembe, she controlled both games to secure a 15–3, 15–3 win.

The result underlined Shaina’s ability to put opponents under pressure early and maintain control throughout a match. Alongside Patri, she will be central to India’s challenge in the girls’ singles competition as the rounds progress.

Parul Choudhary Wins Twice in Girls’ Singles

Parul Choudhary enjoyed a productive day, winning two matches to move through the early rounds.

She opened her campaign against Spain’s Iziar Barcala, winning 15–11, 15–5. Choudhary followed that performance with a 15–7, 15–7 victory over Brazil’s Laura Roviezzo in the Round of 128.

Winning twice in one day requires concentration and the ability to manage energy between matches. Choudhary negotiated both encounters in straight games, strengthening India’s early position in the girls’ singles draw.

Nishchal Chand Leads India’s Boys’ Singles Charge

Nishchal Chand Secures Two Straight-Game Wins

Nishchal Chand was another Indian shuttler to register two victories. He began with a convincing 15–4, 15–6 win over Saudi Arabia’s Rayan Almukhimer before defeating Portugal’s Cesar Rodrigues 15–7, 15–12.

His second match was more competitive, particularly in the closing stages, but Nishchal maintained his composure to complete the win without dropping a game.

Dev Ruparelia and Jagsher Singh Khangurra Advance

Dev Ruparelia also began strongly, defeating Algeria’s Oussama Keddou 15–5, 15–4. Jagsher Singh Khangurra recorded another comfortable result, beating Algeria’s Mohamed Rayane Bouffeniche 15–5, 15–6.

Akhil Reddy Bobba completed the positive set of reported boys’ singles results with a 15–12, 15–12 victory over Malaysia’s Wei Jie Tiew. Unlike the more one-sided contests, Bobba’s match required him to stay focused through two closely fought games.

Together, the boys’ performances gave India a strong start across the singles categories.

India’s World Junior Campaign: What Comes Next?

India entered the BWF World Junior Championships 2026 with a promising squad led by Tanvi Patri, Shaina Manimuthu and Dev Ruparelia. The individual championships are being held in Cairo from October 11 to 17, following the team event earlier in October.

India’s opening-day singles results offered encouragement, with its reported players advancing through their initial matches. However, the challenge will become tougher as the tournament progresses and the remaining contenders face stronger opposition.

For Patri and Shaina, the immediate focus will be on carrying their opening victories into the next rounds. With Choudhary and Nishchal also winning twice, India has several players building early momentum.

The opening results provide a positive foundation, but consistency under pressure will be crucial if India’s young shuttlers are to turn a promising start into a deep run at the World Junior Championships.
