Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge. The 47-year-old Dutchman led the Reds to their 20th English league title in his first campaign but endured a disappointing second season, with Liverpool finishing fifth in the Premier League.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Slot, and Liverpool have already made contact with the Spaniard regarding the position.
Although Liverpool secured qualification for next season’s Champions League, they ended the campaign with just 60 points — their lowest total since the 2015-16 season and 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Liverpool Explain Decision
In a statement, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) acknowledged the significance of Slot’s achievements while explaining the reasoning behind the change.
“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying,” the statement read.
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and — most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves — successful.
“As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.
“From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it.”
Liverpool had publicly maintained that a managerial change was not being considered. However, following a review at the end of the season, the club’s leadership concluded that a different tactical direction was required, favouring a more aggressive and proactive style of football.
The decision was taken by FSG chief executive Michael Edwards and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.
Iraola Identified as Preferred Successor
Iraola, 43, is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising coaches and has earned widespread praise for his attacking philosophy.
His connection with Hughes could prove significant. The Liverpool sporting director appointed Iraola during his time as Bournemouth’s technical director before leaving for Anfield in 2024.
Bournemouth enjoyed an impressive campaign under Iraola, finishing just one place and three points behind Liverpool while securing qualification for next season’s Europa League.
Liverpool now hope to persuade the Spaniard to take charge as they begin a new chapter.
Remarkable Decline After Title Glory
Slot arrived at Anfield in 2024 as the successor to Jurgen Klopp, who ended a highly successful nine-year spell with the club.
His first season could hardly have gone better, delivering Liverpool’s 20th league championship. However, performances declined significantly during his second year despite substantial investment in the squad.
Last summer, Liverpool spent £415 million on six new signings, the largest transfer outlay ever made by a British club in a single window.
The club broke the British transfer record to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125 million and also secured Germany international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116 million.
Despite those additions, Liverpool struggled to maintain their previous standards.
Earlier this month, forward Mohamed Salah criticised the team’s performances, saying Liverpool needed to return to being a “heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear” after they “crumbled” in defeat at Aston Villa.
That style became synonymous with Klopp’s most successful Liverpool sides, which won every major trophy available.
Tribute to Slot’s Legacy
Liverpool stressed that the decision was not a reflection of Slot’s abilities and paid tribute to his achievements during his time at the club.
“The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction,” the statement continued.
“That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
Liverpool also praised Slot’s leadership during one of the most difficult periods in the club’s recent history following the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in July.
“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title,” the statement added.
“That accomplishment — made all the more remarkable as it arrived in his very first season in charge — was built on outstanding coaching and leadership every single day.
“He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.
“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.”
Slot’s coaching staff are also expected to depart, although Liverpool have yet to confirm their futures officially.
