Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Italian Open with a commanding straight-sets victory over Argentine qualifier Thiago Tirante.
The Russian star looked sharp throughout the contest, winning 6-3, 6-2 in a confident display at the Foro Italico. Medvedev, who has often struggled to find consistency on clay courts, appeared far more comfortable in Rome as he controlled rallies and dictated play from the baseline.
The former US Open champion entered the tournament searching for momentum after an inconsistent clay-court swing, but his latest performance suggested he may finally be peaking at the right time ahead of the French Open.
Darderi Produces Stunning Comeback Against Zverev
The biggest headline of the day, however, belonged to Italian sensation Luciano Darderi, who pulled off a sensational comeback victory against world No. 3 Alexander Zverev.
After being completely dominated in the opening set, Darderi bounced back to defeat Zverev 1-6, 7-6(10-8), 6-0 in front of an electrified home crowd in Rome.
The Italian saved four match points during a tense second-set tiebreak before completely overwhelming the German in the deciding set. The victory marked the first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal appearance of Darderi’s career and also his maiden win over a top-10 opponent.
Zverev Left Frustrated After Collapse
Zverev’s dramatic defeat sparked frustration from the German star, who criticised the court conditions after the match.
The second seed appeared in total control after winning the first set comfortably and moving within touching distance of victory multiple times. However, momentum shifted dramatically once Darderi survived the match points and rode the energy of the home crowd.
The German eventually collapsed in the final set, committing a string of unforced errors as Darderi stormed to a memorable victory.
The defeat also represents another setback for Zverev ahead of Roland Garros, where he continues his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam title.
Italian Hopes Continue to Rise in Rome
The tournament has increasingly turned into a celebration for Italian tennis fans, with several local players enjoying strong runs on home soil.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has also advanced comfortably through the draw and remains one of the favourites to lift the title in Rome.
Darderi’s breakthrough victory only added to the growing excitement surrounding Italian tennis, especially with the French Open now just weeks away.
