Bhutan’s left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshey scripted history by becoming the first bowler to take eight wickets in a T20 International match, delivering a spell for the ages against Myanmar. The 22-year-old dismantled the opposition with astonishing figures of 8 for 7 in his four overs, rewriting the record books in the shortest format of the game.
Yeshey’s magical spell ripped through Myanmar’s top order as they were bundled out for just 45 runs while chasing Bhutan’s total of 127. His performance sealed a dominant victory and capped off a one-sided T20I series.
Bhutan completed a 5-0 clean sweep in the series, with Yeshey emerging as the standout performer. The young spinner finished with 13 wickets in the series, underlining his growing stature in international cricket.
Before Yeshey’s landmark achievement, the best bowling figures in men’s T20 Internationals were limited to seven wickets in an innings. Malaysia’s Syazrul Idrus had returned figures of 7 for 8 against China in 2023, while Bahrain’s Ali Dawood claimed 7 for 19 against Bhutan earlier in 2025.
Remarkably, even across all men’s T20 cricket—international and domestic—no bowler had ever taken more than seven wickets in a single innings, making Yeshey’s eight-wicket haul truly unprecedented.
In women’s T20 Internationals, the best bowling figures remain 7 for 0, achieved by Indonesia’s Rohmalia against Mongolia in 2024, a record that also stands as the best across all women’s T20 cricket. That performance is one of only four seven-wicket hauls in women’s T20I history. The others were recorded by Frederique Overdijk (7 for 3 for the Netherlands against France), Alison Stocks (7 for 3 for Argentina against Peru), and Samanthi Dunukedeniya (7 for 15 for Cyprus against the Czech Republic).
Yeshey has been on a steady upward trajectory since making his T20I debut in 2022 against Malaysia, where he impressed with a three-wicket haul. Since then, the left-arm spinner has claimed 38 wickets in 35 T20I matches, firmly establishing himself as one of Bhutan’s most impactful cricketers and announcing his arrival on the global stage.
