Shakib’s Last Dance: All-rounder Targets Farewell Across All Formats

In a stunning twist that has reignited hope among millions of fans, Bangladesh’s iconic all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has announced that he is not officially retired from international cricket and intends to stage a comeback that concludes with a grand farewell across all three formats. Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, the former Bangladesh captain revealed his desire to script a goodbye worthy of his two-decade legacy, insisting that he still has unfinished business in national colours.

Dreaming of a Three-Format Curtain Call

Shakib confirmed that his plan is to return to Bangladesh and play one complete home series comprising Tests, ODIs, and T20Is before formally walking away from the game. “I am officially not retired from all formats. This is the first time I’m revealing it,” he said. “My plan is to go back, play one full series — ODI, Test, and T20 — and retire. It’s a nicer way to say goodbye to the fans who always supported me, and give something back to them.” His statement reverses his earlier stance, when he had stepped away from Tests and T20Is, and he explained that his participation in franchise leagues around the world is intended to keep him physically and mentally ready for an international return.

Maintaining Form in Franchise Cricket

To ensure he remains in top condition for his potential farewell series, Shakib is actively participating in franchise cricket around the world. He is currently representing MI Emirates in the International League T20 (ILT20), being held in the UAE. Earlier this year, he also featured as an international wildcard signing for Atlanta Fire in the USA Minor League Cricket competition. Shakib reiterated that his commitment to these leagues is strategic, saying, “I am hopeful of returning to Bangladesh. That’s why I’m playing T20 leagues. I think it will happen, and that’s the reason — the only reason — I’m playing: to stay fit and in shape so that I can make myself available for international cricket.”

Political and Selection Hurdles

Shakib’s dream farewell, however, remains uncertain amid complex political and legal circumstances. The all-rounder, a former Member of Parliament under the recently ousted Awami League government, has been outside Bangladesh since May 2024 and was named in an FIR connected to an alleged murder case, although he was not in the country at the time. Adding to the challenge, the interim Sports Adviser has previously stated that Shakib will not be considered for national selection due to his association with the former government. Despite the turbulence, Shakib remains resolute in his belief that he will get his chance to retire on home soil.

A Nation Holds Its Breath

The cricketing world now awaits the decision of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and national authorities, who must determine whether the country’s greatest cricketer will be allowed a ceremonial farewell. If approved, the home series would provide a fitting curtain call for a career that has defined Bangladesh cricket. For now, supporters wait anxiously, hoping that one final standing ovation awaits their hero.
