Satwik–Chirag Survive Scare, Storm Into Next Round of Australian Open

India’s star men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty showcased nerves of steel as they advanced to the second round of the Australian Open Super 500 with a gritty, hard-earned win over Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ko-Chi and Po Li-Wei on Tuesday.

Seeded third in the tournament, the world-class Indian duo was tested heavily in a match that demanded both resilience and tactical discipline. The opening game was especially dramatic. Trailing 2–6 early and then 16–14 later, Satwik and Chirag struggled to gain rhythm against the fast, counter-attacking style of their opponents. But true to their reputation, the Commonwealth Games champions clawed back into contention, pushing the contest to 19–19 before saving multiple game points. Their composure shone through as they edged a tense first game 25–23.

The second game saw a more controlled performance from the Indians. Building a slender 7–4 lead early on, they maintained pressure with sharp net play and stronger service returns. Although Chang and Po briefly threatened a comeback, Satwik–Chirag closed out the game 21–16, sealing the match in 48 minutes.

The victory adds momentum to their impressive recent run, which includes back-to-back finals appearances at the Hong Kong Super 500 and China Masters Super 750. While title conversions have narrowly eluded them, Tuesday’s triumph was a reminder of why they remain one of the most feared pairs on the global circuit — their ability to stay calm under pressure and turn difficult moments in their favour.

With this win, the Indian duo has booked a Round of 16 clash against another Taiwanese pair, Su Ching-Heng and Wu Guan-Xun — a match that promises yet another tough test.

As the Australian Open progresses, all eyes will be on Satwik and Chirag to see if they can sustain their form and mount a deep run in Sydney, strengthening India’s growing presence in world badminton.

Meanwhile, India’s singles challenge begins on Wednesday, with Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and rising youngster Ayush Shetty all set to open their campaigns. Their performances will add further depth to India’s hopes at the Super 500 event.

As action intensifies in Sydney, Indian badminton fans will be watching closely — and the early signs suggest a strong week ahead.
