India’s campaign at the Canada Open 2026 came to an end after Aakarshi Kashyap and Tanya Hemanth suffered second-round exits in the women’s singles competition at the BWF Super 300 tournament in Markham, Ontario.
World No. 71 Aakarshi produced a spirited display against fourth seed and World No. 33 Beiwen Zhang of the United States. The Indian shuttler narrowly clinched the opening game 22-20 before Zhang bounced back to win the next two 21-17, 21-17, sealing victory after a hard-fought contest lasting just over an hour.
Tanya Hemanth, meanwhile, found the going difficult against Japan’s Riko Gunji. The Indian was outplayed in straight games, losing 21-11, 21-11 to bow out of the tournament.
The duo had been India’s only bright spots after progressing beyond the opening round, where Aakarshi defeated France’s Anna Tatranova and Tanya overcame American Disha Gupta. However, their exits marked the end of India’s campaign in Canada after a disappointing week that also saw several early eliminations, including former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, who retired hurt in his opening-round match.
