At just 18 years old, Nima Rinji Sherpa has etched his name in mountaineering history — becoming the youngest person ever to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.
On Wednesday morning at 6:05 local time, Nima reached the top of Shishapangma (8,027 meters) alongside fellow climber Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, marking the completion of his extraordinary two-year expedition. The feat was confirmed by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, pending Guinness World Records certification.
Nima began his journey in September 2022 with the ascent of Manaslu (8,163 meters) and has since scaled every one of the planet’s 8,000-meter giants — including Everest (8,848.86 m) and the formidable K2 (8,611 m), known for its deadly slopes.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Nima dedicated the achievement to his initiative #SherpaPower, writing:
“This summit is not just the culmination of my journey, but a tribute to every Sherpa who has ever dared to dream beyond the traditional boundaries set for us. We are not just guides; we are trailblazers.”
For generations, Nepal’s Sherpa community has formed the backbone of Himalayan expeditions — carrying loads, fixing ropes, and ensuring the safety of climbers from across the world, often with little recognition. Through his campaign, Nima hopes to redefine what it means to be a Sherpa, encouraging younger climbers to see themselves as elite athletes and explorers, not just support crew.
Mountaineering company 14 Peaks Expedition celebrated the milestone, writing:
“At just 18, Nima’s journey is a testament to his strength, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of the Sherpa community.”
Insight:
Nima Rinji Sherpa’s record isn’t only about conquering mountains — it’s about reshaping the narrative of Sherpa identity. His triumph stands as both a symbol of youthful ambition and a rallying cry for equality, pride, and recognition for the very people who have kept the Himalayas within humanity’s reach.
