Pakistan Joins FIH Pro League, Neutral Venue Likely for India Clashes

PC- Deccan Herald

Pakistan will return to top-tier international hockey as they join the men’s FIH Pro League 2025-26, raising the prospect of much-anticipated clashes with India at neutral venues due to political restrictions.

Pakistan’s Route to the League

The invitation came after Pakistan finished runners-up in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup held in Malaysia earlier this year. Although New Zealand lifted the title, they opted out of the Pro League, paving the way for Pakistan’s inclusion. This will be Pakistan’s maiden appearance in the “League of the Best,” which features heavyweights such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and India.

Political Hurdles for India-Pakistan Matches

With bilateral sporting ties between India and Pakistan suspended following the April Pahalgam terror attack, both governments have barred direct home-and-away fixtures. A Hockey India official confirmed that any India-Pakistan encounters in the Pro League will take place at neutral venues, yet to be finalized.

A Boost for Global Hockey

FIH President Tayyab Ikram welcomed Pakistan’s entry, calling it “a milestone for world hockey.” He emphasized that Pakistan’s return not only revives the presence of a historically successful team but also enhances the reach of the Pro League worldwide.

The tournament schedule will be released in the coming months, but hockey fans already await the potential face-offs between India and Pakistan on neutral turf.
