India’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has entered its decisive phase with the country producing one of its finest all-round performances in recent Commonwealth history. The penultimate day of competition proved to be India’s biggest medal-winning day, as the contingent collected 16 medals, including a remarkable haul from the boxing ring, lifting the nation to fourth place in the overall medal standings with 39 medals (13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze).

The performance underlined India’s growing strength across multiple sports. While boxing stole the spotlight, Indian athletes also impressed in athletics, para athletics and judo, proving that the country’s medal hopes are no longer dependent on just one or two disciplines.

Boxing becomes India’s biggest success story

The biggest talking point of India’s Commonwealth campaign has undoubtedly been boxing.

Indian boxers delivered a historic performance by winning seven gold medals and three silver medals in a single edition—India’s finest-ever boxing display at the Commonwealth Games. The dominance showcased the country’s growing depth across both men’s and women’s categories.

Among the biggest names was Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, who reached the women’s 75kg final but had to settle for silver after a closely fought contest against Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree. Although Lovlina missed out on gold, her silver added valuable points to India’s overall tally and capped another strong international campaign.

India’s younger boxers also stepped up brilliantly, with several emerging names converting finals into gold medals. Their performances highlighted the strength of India’s grassroots boxing programme and suggested a bright future leading into upcoming Olympic cycles.

Track and field also contributed significantly to India’s medal surge.

Distance runner Gulveer Singh once again showcased his class by adding another medal to India’s tally after already making headlines earlier in the Games. His consistency has made him one of India’s standout athletes in Glasgow.

Indian athletes also secured medals in several field and track events, while others narrowly missed podium finishes. Even where medals did not come, many athletes produced personal bests and season-best performances, indicating India’s improving standards in athletics.

Para athletes continue India’s rise

India’s para athletes continued their remarkable rise on the international stage.

The contingent collected important medals in para athletics, including an impressive one-two finish in one event, demonstrating the growing depth of India’s para sports programme. The performances reflected years of investment in athlete development and increased international exposure.

Judo adds another medal

India’s judo team also made its presence felt.

Unnati Sharma secured a bronze medal, ensuring that India continued adding medals across different sports instead of relying solely on boxing. The medal reinforced India’s steady progress in judo, a discipline where the country has gradually improved its Commonwealth record over recent editions.

Where India stands in the medal race

With one day of competition remaining after August 1, India occupies fourth place in the Commonwealth Games medal table.

India’s tally after August 1

Gold: 13

Silver: 17

Bronze: 9

Total: 39 medals

Only Australia, England and Canada remain ahead of India in the standings, while the Indian contingent still has opportunities to improve its final ranking before the Games conclude.

A campaign built on consistency

Unlike previous Commonwealth Games, where India’s medal count depended heavily on a handful of sports, Glasgow 2026 has showcased a more balanced sporting ecosystem.

India has earned medals from:

Boxing

Athletics

Para Athletics

Weightlifting

Judo

Artistic Gymnastics

Other medal-winning disciplines during the Games

This diversity reflects the expanding talent pool across Indian sport and the country’s increasing competitiveness on the Commonwealth stage.

Comparing Glasgow with previous editions

India has traditionally been one of the strongest Commonwealth nations.

The country finished:

2nd at New Delhi 2010

3rd at Gold Coast 2018

4th at Birmingham 2022 with 61 medals

At Glasgow 2026, India has already positioned itself among the leading nations once again. While the final medal tally will determine whether it surpasses previous editions, the overall quality of performances suggests one of the country’s strongest overseas Commonwealth campaigns in recent memory.

What lies ahead

As the Games head into the final day, India still has medal opportunities remaining in disciplines including judo and cycling, with athletes looking to further improve the country’s standing. Regardless of the final tally, Glasgow 2026 has already demonstrated that Indian sport continues to broaden its international footprint beyond traditional medal-winning events.

The defining image of India’s Commonwealth campaign, however, will remain the extraordinary boxing performances. Seven gold medals from the ring, supported by medals across athletics, para athletics and judo, transformed August 1 into India’s most successful day of the Games and reinforced the nation’s status as one of the Commonwealth’s sporting powerhouses.
