The French Open has scheduled its first women’s night-session match since 2023, with Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka set to face off in a highly anticipated fourth-round clash on Monday.

Tournament organisers selected the meeting between the two four-time Grand Slam champions for the prestigious evening slot on Court Philippe-Chatrier, ending a run of 32 consecutive men’s matches in the prime-time session.

The decision comes amid growing criticism over the lack of women’s representation during the French Open’s showcase night matches.

Historic Night Session Opportunity

Since Roland Garros introduced dedicated night sessions in 2021, women’s tennis has rarely featured in the spotlight fixture.

Of the first 60 evening sessions staged at the tournament, only four had previously featured a women’s match. The showdown between Sabalenka and Osaka will become just the fifth.

The match brings together two of the biggest names in women’s tennis, making it one of the most attractive contests of this year’s tournament.

World number one Sabalenka is chasing her first French Open title, while former world number one Osaka is aiming to continue her impressive comeback after returning from injury setbacks in recent seasons.

Two Grand Slam Stars Meet In Paris

Sabalenka arrives in the fourth round looking to add a Roland Garros crown to her collection of four Grand Slam titles.

The Belarusian has established herself as one of the dominant forces in women’s tennis and remains among the favourites to lift the trophy in Paris.

Osaka, meanwhile, is also a four-time major champion and has shown encouraging form throughout the tournament.

The Japanese star admitted earlier this week that she rarely associated the French Open with night matches because women have featured so infrequently in the slot.

She jokingly described the evening sessions as reserved for “popcorn matches” but said she was comfortable playing at any time of day.

Debate Over Women’s Representation Continues

The scheduling decision comes after years of criticism regarding the limited number of women’s matches featured during prime time at Roland Garros.

Several leading players have publicly questioned the tournament’s approach.

American star Jessica Pegula previously expressed frustration over the issue, while former Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur criticised organisers for failing to provide equal visibility to the women’s game.

The topic has also become a key discussion point between the WTA and tournament officials.

Recently appointed WTA chief executive Valerie Camillo met French Open tournament director Amelie Mauresmo during this year’s event to discuss the matter.

Camillo reportedly emphasised the growing popularity and quality of women’s tennis, highlighting the exciting competition produced by female players in recent years.

Organisers Defend Scheduling Policy

Mauresmo has consistently defended the tournament’s scheduling decisions, arguing that women’s matches can sometimes finish too quickly for a standalone evening session.

The French Open currently stages only one match during its night session, unlike the Australian Open and US Open, which typically feature two matches.

Organisers have resisted calls to expand the schedule, citing concerns about excessively late finishes for players and spectators.

Monday’s clash between Sabalenka and Osaka, however, represents a significant step forward and gives women’s tennis one of the biggest stages at Roland Garros.

With two former world number ones and eight Grand Slam singles titles between them, the encounter promises to be one of the standout matches of the tournament.
