Argentina captain Lionel Messi suffered an injury scare ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after asking to be substituted during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
The 38-year-old forward came off in the 73rd minute after appearing uncomfortable and clutching the back of his left leg during the game played in wet conditions in Miami. Despite the concern, Messi walked normally while heading straight down the tunnel after being replaced.
Inter Miami Coach Provides Injury Update
Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos later suggested the substitution was precautionary and linked it to fatigue caused by the difficult pitch conditions. He stated that there was no official medical report yet but explained that the heavy surface made the coaching staff avoid taking any risks with the veteran star.
Argentina Await Fitness Clarity Before World Cup
Messi is widely expected to represent Argentina at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which begins on 11 June in the United States, Canada and Mexico. If selected, it would mark his record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has carefully managed his workload since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, although he has previously dealt with hamstring-related fitness issues during his time in Major League Soccer.
