Rishabh Pant could be freed from the role of India’s Test vice-captain as the team management weighs the possibility of reducing his leadership responsibilities ahead of a crucial phase in the red-ball calendar.
According to reports, the move is being considered to help Pant focus more on his batting and wicketkeeping responsibilities, especially after his return from a long injury layoff.
Pant remains one of India’s most influential match-winners in Test cricket, with his aggressive batting style often proving decisive in challenging overseas conditions. However, selectors and team officials reportedly believe that easing leadership pressure may help him perform with greater freedom.
The wicketkeeper-batter was elevated to the vice-captaincy role as part of India’s leadership transition plans, but discussions are now underway regarding workload management and long-term team balance.
India are expected to enter a demanding stretch of Test cricket over the coming months, making player fitness, mental freshness and role clarity key priorities for the management.
Pant has been gradually rediscovering rhythm after recovering from the serious injuries sustained in a car accident in late 2022, and his performances across formats have shown encouraging signs of improvement.
No official announcement has been made yet, but the discussions indicate the management’s intent to ensure Pant remains at his best as a specialist batter and wicketkeeper for the national side.
