Indian women’s rugby team captain Shikha Yadav has expressed delight after becoming the highest-paid Indian woman player at the Rugby Premier League (RPL) Season 2 auction. The Delhi player admitted she was shocked after hearing about the record bid.
During the women’s draft held ahead of the new season, Shikha was signed by Delhi Redz for Rs 2.4 lakh, making her the most expensive Indian women’s player in the competition.
Reacting to the milestone, Shikha said she was “incredibly surprised” and described the recognition as a very special moment in her rugby career.
The second edition of the Rugby Premier League marks a major turning point for the sport in India, as women’s franchises have been introduced for the first time alongside the men’s competition.
RPL Season 2 is scheduled to be held at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad from June 16 to 28, featuring both men’s and women’s tournaments.
According to Shikha, the success of the inaugural men’s season helped pave the way for the inclusion of women’s rugby, which she believes will significantly increase the league’s impact and popularity.
She also highlighted the opportunities the competition will create for young Indian players, saying the league provides a major platform for emerging domestic talent to showcase their abilities alongside international stars.
The launch of the women’s competition is being viewed as a historic moment for Indian rugby, with organisers aiming to strengthen pathways for female athletes and improve visibility for the sport nationwide.
Apart from Delhi Redz, the women’s competition will also feature franchises such as Chennai Bulls, Mumbai Dreamers and Kolkata Banga Tigers.
With increasing investment, international participation and growing fan interest, RPL Season 2 is expected to play a key role in the development of rugby in India.
