France head coach Didier Deschamps has stunned football fans by leaving out Eduardo Camavinga and Antoine Griezmann from the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement immediately sparked debate across the football world, with many surprised to see two experienced stars miss the cut ahead of one of the biggest tournaments in the sport.
Camavinga Pays Price For Difficult Season
Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was among the biggest omissions from the 26-man squad. The talented midfielder played an important role during France’s run to the 2022 World Cup final, but injuries and inconsistent form this season appear to have cost him his place.
Deschamps admitted the decision was tough and acknowledged Camavinga’s frustration after a challenging campaign with Real Madrid.
End Of An Era For Griezmann?
The absence of Antoine Griezmann has also raised eyebrows. The Atletico Madrid forward has been one of France’s most influential players over the past decade and was central to their 2018 World Cup triumph.
His omission could signal the beginning of a new era under Deschamps, who appears determined to refresh the squad with younger attacking talent ahead of what will be his final tournament in charge.
Fresh Faces Earn Surprise Call-Ups
While some stars missed out, a few unexpected names made the squad. Young goalkeeper Robin Risser earned his first senior national-team call-up after an impressive Ligue 1 season, while defender Maxence Lacroix and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta also secured places in the final list.
France will still head into the tournament with enormous attacking firepower led by Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and rising stars like Desire Doue and Rayan Cherki.
Tough Group Awaits France
France have been placed in Group I alongside Senegal, Iraq and Norway. Their World Cup campaign begins on June 16 in New Jersey against Senegal.
Despite the controversy surrounding the squad selection, Les Bleus remain one of the favourites to challenge for the trophy in North America.
