Adam Yates has withdrawn from the Giro d’Italia after suffering concussion in a high-speed crash during Saturday’s stage in Bulgaria.
The 33-year-old Briton crashed into a barrier on a wet descent in an incident involving around 30 riders. Despite finishing the stage to Veliko Tarnovo, Yates lost more than 14 minutes to the race leaders.
His team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG, later confirmed he would not start stage three after developing delayed concussion symptoms.
Vine and Soler also injured
Australian rider Jay Vine sustained concussion and an elbow fracture, while Spanish cyclist Marc Soler suffered a pelvic fracture. Both were taken to hospital following the crash.
The team said Yates suffered heavy abrasions and a cut to his left ear. He was initially cleared after roadside concussion checks but later showed further symptoms.
Team officials confirmed the injured riders would remain under medical observation before travelling home to recover.
First Grand Tour withdrawal
This is the first time Yates has failed to finish a Grand Tour in his professional career. He has recorded seven top-10 finishes across cycling’s three biggest stage races, including third place at the Tour de France.
Yates’ twin brother, Simon Yates, won last year’s Giro.
After two stages, Uruguay’s Guillermo Silva Thomas leads the overall standings.
