The final round of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale could begin earlier than usual in a bid to avoid a scheduling clash with the FIFA World Cup final.
The tournament is set to conclude on 19 July, the same day as the global football showpiece at MetLife Stadium, which is scheduled for an 8:00 PM BST kick-off.
R&A Eyes Flexible Scheduling
R&A chief executive Mark Darbon admitted organisers are mindful of the overlap and will attempt to adjust timings where possible.
While The Open typically concludes around 6:30 PM BST, an earlier finish could help avoid a direct clash with the World Cup final. However, potential play-offs could still impact the schedule.
Play-Off Factor Could Complicate Plans
In case of a tie after four rounds, a three-hole play-off is used to determine the winner, followed by sudden death if required.
This means even with an earlier start, a delay remains possible depending on how the final round unfolds.
Record Crowds Expected At Birkdale
This year’s Open is set to welcome more than 300,000 spectators across the week, making it one of the biggest editions in history.
Practice rounds will take place from July 12 to 15, before the tournament begins on July 16.
New Qualifier Added To Expand Event
In an effort to enhance fan engagement, organisers have introduced a ‘Last-Chance Qualifier’ on July 13.
The event will feature 12 players competing over 18 holes, with the winner securing the final spot in the 156-player field.
Darbon said the move is aimed at expanding the event experience while managing high demand, with over one million ticket applications received in recent years.
With careful planning and growing interest, The Open continues to evolve while maintaining its traditional appeal.
