The billionaire owners of AFC Bournemouth are closing in on a takeover of Exeter Chiefs, signalling another major investment shift in English rugby.
Consortium leading the deal
The group involved is Black Knight Football Club, which acquired Bournemouth in 2022 and already holds stakes in FC Lorient and Auckland FC.
Exeter members are expected to vote on the proposed deal at an extraordinary general meeting in May.
Fresh investment in English rugby
If completed, the move would see Exeter become the latest Premiership Rugby club to attract significant external funding. The league has recently seen similar developments, including investment from Red Bull in Newcastle Falcons and a major stake taken by James Dyson in Bath Rugby.
Club seeking long-term stability
Chairman Tony Rowe has been open about the need for financial backing after decades of supporting the club. The potential investment is viewed as a step towards ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness.
With more clubs attracting global investors, the deal reflects a broader shift in the business model of English rugby, where financial strength is becoming increasingly vital for success.
