Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, with the option to extend for a further year. The 33-year-old defender’s previous deal had been due to expire at the end of the season.
Maguire said representing Manchester United remains “the ultimate honour” and he is delighted to continue his journey with the club.
Long United career
Maguire joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80m, which was a world-record transfer fee for a defender at the time. Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has made 266 appearances and won the EFL Cup in the 2022-23 season and the FA Cup the following year.
The centre-back was appointed captain shortly after joining by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but later faced criticism despite continuing to feature under Solskjaer and his successor Ralf Rangnick.
Mixed spell at Old Trafford
Maguire lost the captaincy in 2023 under Erik ten Hag and was close to leaving after a deal was agreed with West Ham United. However, the defender opted to remain at Old Trafford.
He later struggled for game time under Ruben Amorim but has regained a regular place in the side since Michael Carrick took charge as interim boss in January.
Club praise leadership
United director of football Jason Wilcox said Maguire’s professionalism, experience and leadership remain important for the club’s young squad.
“He represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United,” Wilcox said, adding that the defender continues to provide valuable leadership in the dressing room.
