Connolly Stars On Debut As Punjab Chase Down Target
The Punjab Kings began their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign on a winning note, defeating Gujarat Titans by three wickets in a tense encounter at Mullanpur on March 31.
Chasing a target of 163, Punjab held their nerve in the closing stages, thanks to a sensational debut performance by Cooper Connolly, who anchored the chase and guided his side home in a pressure situation.
Punjab Bowlers Restrict Gujarat To Modest Total
Earlier in the match, Gujarat Titans managed 162/6 in their 20 overs after being put in to bat. Punjab’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Vijaykumar Vyshak, who picked up three crucial wickets, kept the Titans from posting a bigger total.
Despite a steady start from skipper Shubman Gill and contributions from the middle order, Gujarat struggled to accelerate in the latter half of the innings due to tight bowling and effective variations from Punjab’s attack.
Early Setbacks But Middle Order Holds Firm
Punjab’s chase did not begin smoothly as they lost an early wicket in the powerplay. However, Prabhsimran Singh and debutant Connolly rebuilt the innings with an aggressive partnership, shifting momentum in favour of the Kings.
Even as Gujarat fought back with timely breakthroughs, Connolly’s composure and finishing ability ensured Punjab stayed on course, eventually sealing victory in the final overs.
Strong Start For Punjab In New Season
The win gives Punjab Kings a confident start to their IPL 2026 journey, while Gujarat Titans will look to regroup after a narrow defeat in their opening match.
With both teams showcasing competitive cricket, the match set the tone for what promises to be an exciting IPL season ahead.
