Miami: In a stunning upset on baseball’s biggest international stage, Venezuela national baseball team created history by defeating United States national baseball team 3–2 to win their maiden World Baseball Classic title in a thrilling final at LoanDepot Park.
The South American side held their nerve in a tense contest, leading for most of the game before surviving a late American comeback to seal a landmark victory.
Venezuela struck first in the third inning through a sacrifice fly, before extending their advantage to 2–0 midway into the game with a towering solo home run. Their pitchers kept the star-studded American lineup in check, frustrating the hosts in front of a packed Miami crowd.
However, the momentum swung dramatically in the eighth inning when Bryce Harper blasted a two-run homer to level the score at 2–2, igniting hopes of a comeback for the defending finalists.
But Venezuela responded like champions. In the ninth inning, after a leadoff walk and a stolen base put pressure on the US defence, Eugenio Suárez delivered a clutch RBI double to restore the lead at 3–2.
The Venezuelan bullpen then held firm in the final inning, shutting down the Americans to spark wild celebrations and complete a fairytale run.
This triumph marks Venezuela’s first-ever World Baseball Classic crown, capping an extraordinary campaign that saw them topple defending champions Japan in the quarterfinals and power past Italy in the semifinals.
For the United States, it was another heartbreaking finish in the tournament, falling just short despite a late surge. But the night belonged to Venezuela, who etched their name in baseball history with a performance defined by composure, resilience, and timely brilliance.
