Aaron Ramsey has once again been omitted from the Wales national football team squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers play-offs, raising fresh doubts over his international future.
The 35-year-old midfielder has been without a club since leaving Pumas UNAM in December and has not played competitive football since September. His lack of match fitness and ongoing injury concerns have kept him out of the national setup since late 2024.
Lack of game time impacts selection
Wales manager Craig Bellamy cited Ramsey’s absence from regular football as the key reason behind his exclusion. With no recent match action, the experienced midfielder faces an uphill task to regain his place ahead of a potential fourth major tournament.
Ramsey remains one of Wales’ most decorated players, having made 86 appearances and played a crucial role in their run to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016.
Injury concerns hit Wales squad
Wales are already dealing with several injury setbacks ahead of their play-off clash. Defender Ben Davies, striker Kieffer Moore, and centre-back Chris Mepham have all been ruled out.
In their absence, players such as Danny Ward, Rhys Norrington-Davies, and Rabbi Matondo have been included in the squad.
With Davies unavailable, Harry Wilson is expected to lead the side as captain after previously impressing in the role.
Crucial play-off matches ahead
Wales will face Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team in the semi-final at Cardiff City Stadium on 26 March.
If they progress, they will host either Italy national football team or Northern Ireland national football team in the final.
Victory in the play-offs would secure a place in the World Cup group stage alongside Canada national soccer team, Switzerland national football team, and Qatar national football team.
With Ramsey’s future uncertain, Wales may be entering a new era as they look to qualify for another major tournament without one of their most experienced players.
