George Russell delivered a dominant performance to take sprint pole at the Chinese Grand Prix, leading a strong one-two for Mercedes. Russell finished nearly three-tenths ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli, continuing his impressive start to the season.
Mercedes dominate qualifying session
Russell clocked a lap of 1:31.520 at the Shanghai International Circuit, comfortably ahead of Antonelli by 0.289 seconds. The next closest driver was Lando Norris of McLaren, who finished over six-tenths behind the pole time.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton placed fourth, narrowly missing out on third, while McLaren driver Oscar Piastri secured fifth. The second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc completed the top six.
Russell said the Mercedes car had performed strongly throughout the day and credited improved engine behaviour compared to the season-opening race in Australia.
Red Bull struggle as Verstappen falls back
Defending champion Max Verstappen endured a difficult session, qualifying only eighth for Red Bull Racing. He finished more than 1.7 seconds off Russell’s pace and admitted the car lacked grip and balance.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly took seventh place ahead of Verstappen, while Haas rookie Oliver Bearman and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the top ten.
Challenges continue for struggling teams
Further down the grid, Williams and Aston Martin continued to struggle. Williams driver Carlos Sainz qualified 17th, while Fernando Alonso placed 19th for Aston Martin.
With Mercedes showing strong pace early in the weekend, Russell will start the sprint race as the favourite while rivals look to close the performance gap during the remainder of the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.
