Lewis Hamilton finally celebrated one of the biggest moments of his Ferrari career after producing a flawless drive to win the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday. The British veteran combined pace, tyre management and Ferrari’s bold race strategy to claim his 106th Formula 1 victory, ending a wait of nearly two years for a Grand Prix triumph and giving Ferrari its first win of the 2026 season.
Starting from second on the grid behind Mercedes’ George Russell, Hamilton stayed within striking distance throughout the opening stages before Ferrari opted for an aggressive three-stop strategy. The race turned in Ferrari’s favour when a Virtual Safety Car, triggered by Fernando Alonso’s retirement, allowed Hamilton to make a perfectly timed pit stop without losing significant track position. Armed with fresher tyres, Hamilton controlled the closing laps to take the chequered flag in style.
Russell finished second after leading the early part of the race, while McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the podium in third. The result also created a piece of Formula 1 history, producing the first all-British podium since 1968.
The biggest talking point, however, came in the closing stages. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli had overtaken teammate Russell and appeared set for another podium finish before his Mercedes suddenly developed a mechanical problem on Lap 62 of 66. The unexpected retirement ended the Italian teenager’s remarkable streak of five consecutive Grand Prix victories and handed Hamilton a valuable 25-point gain in the championship standings.
Ferrari’s celebrations were slightly tempered after Charles Leclerc also retired due to a technical issue, denying the Italian outfit a double points finish. Several other drivers, including Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Nico Hülkenberg and Ollie Bearman, also failed to reach the finish, making it a race of high attrition with only 14 classified finishers.
Hamilton’s victory carried even greater significance as the 41-year-old became the oldest Formula 1 Grand Prix winner since Jack Brabham in 1970. It was also Ferrari’s first Grand Prix success since 2024, providing fresh momentum to the Scuderia’s championship challenge after Mercedes had dominated the opening rounds of the season.
With the championship now tightening, the 2026 Formula 1 season heads to its next round with renewed excitement. Antonelli continues to lead the standings, but Hamilton’s breakthrough victory has firmly reignited both his title ambitions and Ferrari’s hopes of returning to the top of Formula 1.
