George Russell set the fastest time in the opening practice session for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, giving Mercedes an encouraging start to the weekend.

The British driver finished 0.203 seconds clear of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top three ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen.

The session featured an unusual look to the grid, with six rookie drivers taking part as teams fulfilled Formula One’s requirement to hand practice opportunities to young talents during the season.

Russell sets the benchmark

Russell’s quickest lap put Mercedes at the top of the timesheets in a closely contested session.

Piastri continued McLaren’s strong form with the second-fastest time, while Leclerc showed promising pace for Ferrari despite running a major aerodynamic upgrade package for the first time.

Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull as teams focused on gathering data ahead of qualifying and the race.

Rookies impress in busy session

Among the young drivers, Formula 2 leader Leonardo Fornaroli delivered an eye-catching performance for McLaren, finishing fifth overall.

Paul Aron, driving for Audi while continuing his role as Alpine reserve driver, secured sixth place.

Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad also gained valuable experience, while Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic impressed after stepping into Lewis Hamilton’s car for the session.

The mandatory rookie appearances provided teams with an opportunity to evaluate emerging talent while collecting additional data on the Barcelona circuit.

Ferrari tests major upgrades

Leclerc spent the session evaluating a significant Ferrari upgrade package that included a redesigned floor and aerodynamic components.

The Italian team plans to continue assessing the updates during the second practice session, with Hamilton expected to run the same package later in the day.

Ferrari will be hoping the developments help close the gap to championship rivals McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull.

Minor incidents but no major disruptions

The session passed without any significant interruptions, although several drivers struggled over the kerbs at Turn Eight.

Cadillac reserve driver Colton Herta experienced a moment at the corner, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Ferrari’s Beganovic also ran wide during their laps.

Meanwhile, Williams reserve driver Luke Browning was unable to record a lap after an electrical issue struck Alex Albon’s car, limiting his opportunity to gain valuable track time.

Top 10 in First Practice

  1. George Russell (Mercedes)
  2. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
  3. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
  4. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
  5. Leonardo Fornaroli (McLaren)
  6. Paul Aron (Audi)
  7. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls)
  8. Dino Beganovic (Ferrari)
  9. Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls)
  10. Franco Colapinto (Alpine)

With teams now turning their attention to the second practice session, Russell’s pace has given Mercedes an early boost, but the true competitive picture is expected to become clearer as the weekend progresses.
