Tehran cites safety concerns after escalating conflict
Iran has said it may not be able to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, raising serious concerns about the country’s involvement in the tournament due to ongoing security issues and political tensions. Iranian authorities stated that the safety of players and citizens remains their top priority amid the current unstable situation.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Iran had already secured qualification for the tournament, making the announcement a significant development in international football.
“Our children are not safe,” says sports minister
Iran’s Sports and Youth Minister Ahmad Donyamali said the present situation does not allow the national football team to travel and compete abroad. Speaking about the possibility of participating in the World Cup, he said the safety of people must come first.
He reportedly stated that under current conditions, the country cannot risk sending its players to the tournament, adding that “our children are not safe.” The statement reflects growing fears within Iran following rising geopolitical tensions.
Possible impact on the tournament
If Iran officially withdraws from the competition, FIFA may need to decide how to fill the vacant spot in the tournament. According to football regulations, replacement teams are sometimes selected from the same qualification region.
Iran’s absence would be a major setback for Asian football and could also affect group-stage planning for the 2026 World Cup.
Final decision yet to be confirmed
Despite the strong statement from government officials, the Iranian Football Federation has not yet issued a final confirmation about withdrawing from the tournament. Discussions between authorities and football officials are expected before a final decision is made.
The situation highlights how international conflicts and security concerns can influence global sporting events, including one of the world’s biggest football tournaments.
