A dramatic confrontation broke out at the Cheltenham Festival after Irish amateur jockey Declan Queally accused British rider Nico de Boinville of verbally abusing him at the start of a race.
The clash took place before the Turners Novices’ Hurdle, when jockeys were lining up at the start following a false start that forced officials to switch to a standing start. The change created tension among riders as they jostled for position.
Speaking afterwards, Queally said the exchange was upsetting, especially because his family was present at the track.
“Being abused by an English rider wasn’t very nice. I’m an amateur riding here in front of my kids. It was horrific,” Queally said.
Television footage appeared to show de Boinville shouting toward Queally during the tense moments before the race began.
De Boinville, however, dismissed the accusation when asked about the incident.
“Maybe he should look in the mirror,” the British jockey responded.
Despite the pre-race drama, the race went ahead and was won by King Rasko Grey, ridden by Paul Townend. De Boinville finished second aboard Act of Innocence, while Queally placed fifth on I’ll Sort That.
The heated exchange quickly became one of the talking points of the festival, highlighting the intense pressure and rivalry among riders at one of jump racing’s biggest events.est events.
