Real Madrid CF have launched an investigation after a supporter allegedly performed a Nazi salute before their Champions League victory over SL Benfica.
Television cameras appeared to capture the gesture as they panned across the Santiago Bernabéu before kick-off. Security staff quickly identified the individual, who was removed from the stadium.
In a statement, Real Madrid said they had asked their disciplinary committee to begin “an immediate expulsion procedure” against the fan, adding that the club condemns any gesture that incites violence or hatred in sport and society.
Match overshadowed by racism row
The incident came amid heightened sensitivity following allegations involving forward Vinicius Junior. During the first leg in Lisbon, he claimed he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.
The match was briefly halted after Vinicius informed the referee, and Prestianni was later handed a provisional one-match ban after UEFA rejected Benfica’s appeal. A full investigation remains ongoing.
Before Wednesday’s second leg, a banner reading “No to racism” was displayed inside the Bernabéu. Vinicius went on to score the winner in a 2-1 victory, sealing a 3-1 aggregate triumph and progression to the last 16.
Team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni said the result was “for everyone who stands against racism.”
