Milan: In a final that will be remembered for generations, the United States defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime to capture the men’s ice hockey gold medal at the Winter Olympics 2026 — their first Olympic title in the event since the iconic triumph at 1980 Winter Olympics.
Forty-six years to the day after the “Miracle on Ice” team etched its name into sporting folklore, a new generation of American stars delivered another unforgettable chapter. Forward Jack Hughes scored the golden goal just 1:41 into three-on-three overtime, slipping the puck between the legs of Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington to seal the dramatic victory.
“It doesn’t matter about the goal. Just an unbelievable team win,” said Hughes, who plays for the New Jersey Devils. “We’re so proud to win for our country.”
Hellebuyck Stands Tall
If Hughes was the hero in attack, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was the backbone of the American defence. The Winnipeg Jets star made 41 saves, repeatedly denying a relentless Canadian offence led by the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.
“Unbelievable game by Hellebuyck. He was our best player tonight by a mile,” Hughes added.
Canada, coached by Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning, equalised late in the second period through Makar after sustained pressure. The Canadians controlled long stretches of the game and outshot the Americans, but could not find a way past Hellebuyck in the decisive moments.
Canadian captain Sidney Crosby missed the final due to injury, a significant blow to the defending powerhouse.
A Family Affair for the Hughes Brothers
The tournament proved historic for the Hughes family. Jack’s brother, Quinn Hughes, who plays for the Minnesota Wild, had earlier scored an overtime winner in the quarter-finals. Their mother, Ellen Hughes, also celebrated gold after the U.S. women’s team triumphed in their final — also against Canada in overtime.
“He just loves the game more than anyone,” Quinn said of his younger brother after the match.
Emotional Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau
The victory carried deep emotional weight. Following the final buzzer, Team USA honoured the late Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically passed away in 2024 along with his brother. Players skated with Gaudreau’s jersey, which had hung in the locker room throughout the tournament, dedicating the win to his memory.
“It’s what he means to USA Hockey. We miss him greatly — and we did it for him,” said Brady Tkachuk.
Finland Take Bronze
A day earlier, Finland secured the bronze medal with a dominant 6–1 win over Slovakia, rounding out a tournament widely praised for featuring fully NHL-based rosters and delivering elite international competition.
As Canada’s coach Cooper aptly put it: “In the big picture, the real winner of this tournament was ice hockey.”
But on this historic night in Milan, it was the United States who stood tallest — reclaiming Olympic glory in a clash that lived up to its billing and adding a new golden chapter to American hockey history.
