Milan: Finland powered to a commanding 6–1 victory over Slovakia on Saturday night to secure the bronze medal in men’s ice hockey at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
The emphatic win marked Finland’s third consecutive Olympic bronze in tournaments featuring NHL players, adding to their podium finishes at Sochi in 2014 and Vancouver in 2010. The Finns also claimed silver earlier at Turin in 2006.
Dominant Third Period Seals the Medal
Erik Haula led the charge with two goals, while Joel Armia contributed a goal and two assists in a clinical performance.
Finland broke the contest open in the third period, scoring four times to put the result beyond doubt. After establishing a 2–0 lead, they briefly allowed Slovakia back into the game before Roope Hintz and Kaapo Kakko struck 42 seconds apart early in the final frame. Two empty-net goals capped a dominant finish.
The victory served as a strong response to Finland’s heartbreaking 3–2 semifinal defeat to Canada, sealed by Nathan MacKinnon with just 35.2 seconds remaining.
Overcoming Adversity
Finland’s medal run was particularly impressive given the absence of captain Aleksander Barkov, who is recovering from knee surgery following an injury sustained at Florida Panthers training camp in September. Despite missing their top player, the Finns showcased depth, discipline and composure throughout the tournament.
Slovakia’s Brave Run Ends
Slovakia, who mounted an inspiring underdog campaign in Milan, fell short of defending the bronze they won in Beijing four years ago. Their journey ended with a semifinal defeat to the United States before Saturday’s loss.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s gold medal clash, where Canada will face the United States in what promises to be a blockbuster North American showdown.
