Indian athletics received a significant boost as Krishna Jayasankar became the first Indian woman to cross the coveted 16-metre mark in indoor shot put. The 22-year-old achieved the historic feat at the 2025 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships in the United States, delivering a record-breaking throw of 16.03 metres.

Krishna’s performance not only earned her a bronze medal but also saw her rewrite the Indian indoor record. The previous national indoor mark of 15.54m, set by Poornarao Rane in 2023, was surpassed as Krishna entered a new chapter in Indian women’s throwing events.

Dramatic Finish Secures Podium Spot

The competition witnessed a thrilling conclusion. Krishna was placed fourth heading into the final stages and appeared to be outside the medals. However, she produced her best throw when it mattered most, launching the shot to 16.03m in the final round to move into third place and claim bronze.

American athlete Mya Lesnar dominated the event with a gold-medal-winning throw of 19.02m, while Gabby Morris secured silver with 17.09m. Krishna’s late surge pushed her ahead of several competitors and highlighted her ability to perform under pressure.

A Rapid Rise in Form

The achievement reflects Krishna’s impressive progress over the past few months. Before this competition, her personal indoor best stood at 15.03m, recorded at the same venue earlier in the season. Improving by a full metre within weeks, she broke through a barrier no Indian woman had crossed indoors before.

While the overall Indian women’s shot put record remains 18.41m, held by Abha Khatua, Krishna’s breakthrough performance signals the emergence of a new contender in Indian athletics.
