Alex Ovechkin Returns for Historic 22nd NHL Season with Washington Capitals

Alex Ovechkin will return for a record-breaking 22nd season with the Washington Capitals after signing a new one-year contract, extending one of the most remarkable careers in National Hockey League history. The announcement ends speculation over the veteran captain’s future and ensures fans will get another season of one of hockey’s greatest goal scorers.

The 40-year-old forward, who turns 41 in September, agreed to a one-year deal worth an average annual value of $4.25 million, with additional performance bonuses included in the contract. Ovechkin said he remains healthy, enjoys competing, and is eager to help the Capitals return to Stanley Cup contention after missing the playoffs last season.

Ovechkin enters the 2026-27 campaign as the NHL’s all-time leading regular-season goal scorer with 929 career goals. He surpassed the legendary Wayne Gretzky in April 2025, breaking one of the most iconic records in professional sports. Nicknamed “The Great 8,” Ovechkin has spent his entire NHL career with the Capitals since being selected first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft.

Beyond his scoring exploits, Ovechkin has been the face of the Capitals for nearly two decades. He captained the franchise to its first-ever Stanley Cup title in 2018 and was named the playoff MVP after leading the team to championship glory. His leadership and consistency have made him one of the most influential players in the history of the league.

The new contract also makes Ovechkin the longest-tenured athlete in Washington, D.C.’s major professional sports history. Capitals management believes his experience, leadership and scoring ability remain invaluable as the club looks to bounce back in the upcoming season.

With another season ahead, Ovechkin has the opportunity to further extend his seemingly untouchable goal-scoring record while adding another chapter to an already legendary NHL career. Although retirement speculation had intensified in recent months, the Russian superstar has made it clear that he still has unfinished business on the ice.
