Stand-in captain Lorcan Tucker struck an unbeaten 94 to power Ireland to a 96-run victory over Oman in Colombo, keeping their T20 World Cup qualification hopes alive. After defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia, Ireland required not only a win but a significant boost to their net run-rate — and delivered emphatically with a record-breaking total.
Tucker Anchors Record-Breaking Total Ireland were wobbling at 25-2 when Tucker arrived, and further early strikes left them 47-3 in the powerplay. Shakeel Ahmed removed three top-order batters as Ireland’s tournament struggles threatened to continue. But a 101-run stand off 56 balls between Tucker and Gareth Delany transformed the innings, lifting Ireland to their highest-ever T20 international score of 235-5. Tucker’s inventive knock featured 10 fours and four sixes, while Delany’s 56 off 30 provided vital acceleration.
Late Surge Puts Game Beyond Oman The final five overs produced 93 runs, with George Dockrell smashing 35 from just nine balls to ensure Ireland maximised their net run-rate opportunity. Tucker was left stranded on 94, denied a maiden T20 century but having already delivered the standout innings of the tournament so far.
Little Leads Ruthless Bowling Display Oman began brightly, reaching 63-2 after the powerplay, and Aamir Kaleem’s 50 briefly hinted at resistance. But wickets fell steadily as Josh Little returned to form with 3-16, removing any realistic chance of a chase. The left-arm seamer’s pace and accuracy dismantled the middle order as Oman were bowled out for 139 in 18 overs.
Ireland now face Zimbabwe on Tuesday knowing victory is essential, with other results also needing to fall in their favour if they are to reach the Super 8s.
