Riyadh, Saudi Arabia : Jon Rahm has criticised the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) decision to limit ranking points at LIV Golf events to only the top 10 finishers, calling the system unfair and inconsistent with other tours. The ruling marks the first time LIV Golf players will earn OWGR points, but under tighter conditions due to the league’s smaller fields and format.
Speaking at LIV Golf’s season opener in Riyadh, the two-time major champion welcomed the recognition but voiced frustration over unequal treatment.
“I don’t like how we’re not being treated the same as every other tour,” Rahm said.
“It doesn’t seem fair.”
Rahm warned the rule could hurt consistent performers, noting that finishing 11th earns zero points, effectively counting like a missed cut — and in some cases, could even lower a player’s ranking.
Despite the criticism, Rahm acknowledged progress:
“I’m thankful LIV Golf got their foot in the door,” he added, while insisting “there’s work to be done.”
The OWGR points matter significantly for major championship qualification, making the ruling a key issue for LIV players seeking fair global recognition.
