Wolverhampton Wanderers are close to completing a loan deal for Marseille and England midfielder Angel Gomes as he prepares for a return to the Premier League.
Discussions between the two clubs have been ongoing for several weeks, with sources confirming that negotiations are now at an advanced stage and include an option to buy.
Premier League Return Near for Gomes
The 25-year-old joined Marseille from Lille last summer but has struggled to secure a regular starting place in Ligue 1.
Gomes has not started a league match since November and was also left out of Marseille’s Champions League starting line-ups, prompting the club to allow him to leave during the January transfer window.
Despite limited starts, he has scored four goals in 20 appearances across all competitions this season.
Limited Role Prompts Loan Decision
Marseille officials believe a temporary move will help Gomes regain match fitness and confidence through consistent game time.
Wolves see him as a creative midfield option who can strengthen their squad for the remainder of the campaign, especially as they push for stability in the league.
The loan deal is expected to be finalised in the coming days, subject to medical and paperwork.
From United Prodigy to England International
Gomes rose through the youth system at Manchester United and made history in 2017 when he became the club’s youngest player since Duncan Edwards.
He made his senior debut at just 16 years and 263 days, replacing Wayne Rooney and attracting widespread attention for his talent.
Gomes has earned four England caps under former caretaker manager Lee Carsley, with his most recent appearance coming in October 2024.
