Lorenzo Musetti produced an impressive performance to defeat Taylor Fritz in straight sets and book his place in the Australian Open quarter-finals.
The Italian fifth seed eased past the American ninth seed 6-2, 7-5, 6-4, showing confidence and control throughout the match.
Dominant display from start to finish
After surviving a tough five-set battle against Tomas Machac in the previous round, Musetti looked fresh and composed on Monday.
He dictated play from the baseline, mixed his shots well and rarely allowed Fritz to settle into any rhythm.
With sharp movement and accurate hitting, Musetti ensured he stayed in command during key moments of the contest.
Serve proves key weapon
Musetti’s powerful serving played a major role in his victory.
He fired 13 aces and won 84% of points on his first serve, while saving both break points he faced.
“The serve was really working well,” Musetti said. “It was one of my best performances with aces in my career.”
Djokovic awaits in last eight
The 23-year-old will now face 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.
Djokovic reached the last eight after Jakub Mensik withdrew due to an abdominal injury, giving the Serbian three days of rest before the clash.
“Every time I play Novak, it’s a lesson,” Musetti said. “I’m ready to push him to the maximum.”
A major milestone achieved
With this win, Musetti has now reached the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
It is his best-ever run at the Australian Open and marks another step forward in his career.
“The goal was to start the year well,” he said. “Being here is really a dream.”
Emotional dedication after victory
Musetti dedicated the win to his coach and physiotherapist, who had to return home earlier in the week for personal reasons.
“They’re here with their hearts,” he said. “I feel more mature on the court and I’m playing for them.”
The quarter-final against Djokovic will take place on Wednesday, with Musetti hoping to cause one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
