Real Madrid moved to the top of La Liga after beating Villarreal 2-0, with Kylian Mbappek once again leading from the front. The match remained tight in the first half, with both teams creating few clear chances and focusing on defensive discipline.
Second-half impact changes game
Madrid returned after the break with greater urgency and were rewarded almost immediately. Mbappe opened the scoring after reacting fastest to Vinicius Junior’s low cross, firing home from close range. The goal took his league tally to 21 goals in 19 matches this season. Some Villarreal players protested, claiming Vinicius had taken the ball out of play, but the referee allowed the goal to stand.
Vinicius remained dangerous throughout the second half, although his La Liga goal drought extended to 13 games. Villarreal missed a golden chance to equalise when Gerard Moreno fired over the bar from close range in the 62nd minute.
Late penalty seals crucial victory
Madrid wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time when Mbappe was fouled by Alfonso Pedraza. The forward calmly converted from the spot with a Panenka-style finish.
After the match, Mbappe explained his decision, saying:
“This penalty was for Brahim. He missed one like this in the AFCON final, so this one was for him.”
The successful penalty confirmed Madrid’s third straight win in all competitions under manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
Title race heats up again
Madrid had trailed Barcelona by four points at the start of January, but recent results have turned the race around. Los Blancos now sit two points clear at the top of the table.
Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso earlier this season, has overseen a strong revival despite an early Copa del Rey exit.
“We are improving every week,” Arbeloa said.
“The mentality of this team is very strong.”
Barcelona can still reclaim top spot if they beat bottom side Real Oviedo on Sunday at 15:15 GMT, keeping the title race wide open.
