Teenager Iva Jovic continued her impressive run at the Australian Open by reaching her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final with a dominant victory in Melbourne. The 18-year-old American produced a near-perfect display to overwhelm Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.
Dominant display sends Jovic through
Jovic dropped just one game in a ruthless 6-0, 6-1 win that lasted only 53 minutes. The 29th seed showed composure and confidence, backing up her earlier straight-sets victory over seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, which was her first win against a top-10 player.
After the match, Jovic said:
“I’m just going to try to take care of my side of the net. She’s number one for a reason, but that’s what I want.”
It is the first time Jovic has gone beyond the second round at a major, marking a major breakthrough in her young career.
Sabalenka sets up blockbuster meeting
World number one Aryna Sabalenka booked her place in the last eight with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win over Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. Although she dominated the first set, the Belarusian had to fight back after almost losing a 4-1 lead in the second.
Sabalenka said after the match:
“She’s an amazing player. It was quite a fight and I’m super happy I closed it in straight sets.”
The two-time defending champion has now reached at least the quarter-finals in 13 consecutive Grand Slams and remains unbeaten in sets at this year’s tournament.
Young star draws inspiration from Djokovic
Earlier in the tournament, Jovic revealed she had benefited from advice from Novak Djokovic. The 24-time Grand Slam champion praised her potential, saying she has “all the tools” to become a future champion.
Jovic, who won her first WTA title in Guadalajara at 17, believes playing top players will help her grow.
“I want to play the best and see how it goes,” she said.
“I’m really excited.”
History and confidence on the line
Sabalenka, champion in 2023 and 2024, is now just two wins away from reaching her fourth consecutive Australian Open final. Meanwhile, Jovic will aim to cause a major upset and continue her remarkable rise.
With youth meeting experience, the quarter-final promises to be one of the most exciting clashes of the tournament.
